Scientific Society Utilizes Media Paywall to Increase Revenue

Why C&EN Needed a Paywall ACS print media membership numbers decreased significantly in 2017. To support ACS’ ambition to reverse that decline and grow it’s membership ranks, ACS decided to introduce a metered paywall on C&EN.

The main goals were:

  1. Grow traffic on cen.acs.org to cater advertising goals.
  2. Collect useful data from a member to build more useful data that can support marketing and advertising campaigns.
  3. Increase revenue by funneling the users through metered paywall and ultimately encouraging them to purchase a membership.

This solution is ideal for customers with the following challenges/requirements:

Paywall is a method of restricting access to site’s content via paid subscription, there are models that allow for a stepped approach, e.g. 10 free articles a month for registration and unlimited for a monthly payment. Beginning in the mid-2010s,newspapers started implementing paywalls on their websites to boost revenue after years of decline in paid print readership and advertising revenue. Few interesting implementations of paywall are: Washington Post, YouTube, New York Times.
